alex's death was faked and she was put into the witness protection program. fans of the show liked to play up the "relationship" between the two of them, but neither of them are lesbians.

Olivia loves men! Alex, played by Stephanie March, left the show. They had her go into the witness protection program for bringing down some major arms/drug dealers. They shot her and the feds made it look like she died. Olivia and her partner didn't even know at first, but they do now. She actually came back for a guest appearance much later for the trial of the man she put away because he was going to go free. It is quite the great story! If you get a chance to see it on repeats - you will enjoy!

Olivia was/ is not a lesbian. Alex Cabot (the blond woman) went into hiding. She came back in one episode in 2005 called GHOST: "When a wealthy couple is found dead in their home, Benson and Stabler soon realize that their deaths are connected to a drug smuggling ring. Eventually the road leads back to the same drug dealers who forced a former assistant district attorney into hiding, and Alex Cabot comes home to face her enemies." But after that she was no longer on the show.

Whether Olivia was in love with her was never addressed. I just know that she's had many relationships with men, so I don't know how much water that theory holds.
