I thought there was a key word that initiated the dropping of the ping pong balls, but I cannot remember.

Mr. Moose was a puppet character (in the form of a moose) on the children's television show Captain Kangaroo. He is best known for riddles and knock-knock jokes that resulted in hundreds of ping-pong balls cascading from above and hitting the Captain in the head. (the dropping of balls comes along with the punchline - usually "ping pong balls"). He was portrayed by Cosmo Allegretti. Allegretti was also known for portraying Mr. Moose's companion, the carrot-stealing Bunny Rabbit, and The Captain's hapless klutz of a painter and handyman, Dennis.

Moose would tell a knock-knock joke, and the answer was always "ping-pong balls"

The pingpong ball drop was a common feature on this program. Basically the balls were in a container where a stage-hand would throw a lever when the cue signal was given and then the balls would fall to Earth and on the captain.

They fell on Captains head. I think it was when Captain said "ping pong balls."
