WHAT HAPPENS ON TV SHOWS DURING A COMMERCIAL BREAk?

Sometimes when I watch tv with a live audience the person starring the show says we'll take a quick commercial break. When I was watching Chapelles show, Dave Chapelle said we'll take a quick commercial break to the live audience in concert. What happens to the show in real life. Why would he just say that if its a live show? What does the audience see when there is a commercial break? Does dave chapelle just continue the show and say it for nothing. What happens?

Well, the sponsors (commercials) help pay for the show, so they have to take a break. That said, the time is used, depending on the show, for various things; the host talks to the audience, the host gets a drink of water or gets their makeup touched up; or they'll start chatting with their guest to get them at ease before the cameras roll again.

If it's live they'll get prepared for more shooting by going to the bathroom/having a quick bite/getting make-up fixed/ect. If it's just for a commercial while they're recording in front of a live audiance it depends on the company but most just cut the film and go shoot the next scene.
