Question:
Are cartoons really only for kids?
?

I am an avid fan of cartoon network and am nearly into my thirties. A lot of my friends say that cartoons are for kids and I should grow up. Do you think that cartoons are for kids or everyone?

Are you kidding? A lot of cartoons are too good for kids. Pinky and the Brain isn't a kids cartoon. It's wasted on kids. Same with Freakazoid and the Warner Kids. What's a kid going to get out of

"Hallo, pretty lady."

"Mom. Call me Mom."

"OK, pretty lady."

Bakshi's revamped Mighty Mouse was definitely for adults and Tex Avery was never pretending to entertain anyone but himself. Even Taz is too laconic for the supposed audience of kids.

You stick with it. The friends who say you should grow up are obviously not as cerebral as you.------------ Next time they start give them some of this http://www.texavery.com/sounds/shutup.wav

Absolutely 100% NOT! Those are the sort of people that let a 5 year old watch South Park. I personally watch Yu-Gi-Oh, Captain Scarlet, Dangermouse, Futurama... the list goes on. My personal opinion is that some of these cartoons are written with one level for kids, and another for the adults - Pixar films are a classic example. I get so many more car jokes out of Cars than a 7-year old does. And Shrek - definitely a lot of film references on there for the adults. Cartoons are merely another form of entertainment - in fact, I would suspect that most of the anime cartoons coming out of the Far east are designed for an adult market.

Plus, you're never too old to laugh at an innocent joke! I have been catching up with Chorlton and the Wheelies lately! If you lose your ability to have fun with the children's programmes, then you're ready to give up on your youthfulness.

Forgot to mention - I'm 35...

Tell your "friends" to take a hike or grow up themselves. Either that or tell 'em to actually know what they're talking about before they say something.

Cartoons were not created for children in the first place. They were usually humorous or adventurous preludes to movies way back before television came into being. This was a time when ADULTS went to theaters for their entertainment. Children were usually left at home with a 'sitter. What child would understand the sexual undertones of Betty Boop or the political innuendo of Bugs Bunny? Hell, even the earlier works of Disney (who is more family oriented) had many political undertones for the times and there's even a slur towards the Japanese of the times when we were fighting WW2 in one or more of his Goofy shorts that you will NEVER see again on broadcast TV of today due to politically correct societies nowadays.

Even more modern cartoons have undertones that children of today just don't get. Look at one of the Power Puff Girls episodes where they had the "Beat Alls" battling the girls and the female chimp "Yoko Mojo." I would hazard a guess that no one under the age of... 20 or so will understand the reference to those names.

Japanese anime is aimed at a more mature audience as well. That's a whole nation that enjoys their comics and animation

Bring these and other facts you find via the Net up the next time they start their crap and I can almost guarantee that they'll shut their mouths real fast after you make them look like uneducated fools.

Not all cartoons are for kids.

Bravo have the adult Swim series which shows programs like sealab and the Venture bros.

Also if you look at cartoons from the past 10-15 years, some of the best cartoons have been shown that are more adult orientated, but can also be watched by kids.

Take for example the Batman animated adventuresfrom the 90's.

most people who watched this show were adults.

it showed a batman in a dark tone like the burton movies.

it looked and felt as if it was aimed for adults, but kids could enjoy it as well.

The justice league as well although a cartoon started to get a bit more darker in tone dealing with violence and betrayal, and in one episode superman lobotomises a villain.

not exactly the sort of thing you want to explain to a kid.

so in this case i would have to say anyone can enjoy cartoons

Oh, my goodness, NO. I'm 31 and I LOVE cartoons. The Cartoon Network remains my favorite station on TV. I really miss the classic cartoons though -- the old Warner Brothers and Tex Avery cartoons that they don't really show nowadays.

Rest assured that you're not alone in your love of cartoons. They're not just for kids. Hell, a lot of my friends are into cartoons as well. (We like pulling out random lines from "the Simpsons", "Animaniacs", "Pinky and the Brain" and others when the situation is appropriate)

If you like cartoons, continue to watch them. Do what makes you happy! Life is too short to not do what you enjoy. :)

Cartoons are for anyone who wants to watch. Personally I'm still upset about them taking Sailor Moon and Dragonball off the air. I love those shows. I would go into my long list of favs but it would take to long. Not to mention I have my kids let me know when they see a cartoon that I might like. Oh and don't feel bad about your age. I'm 33.

Your friends watch cartoons too. The just do it when no one is watching.

Cartoons are made for everyone to enjoy.

A lot of cartoons were made to be used at the pictures during the war.

Since most people who went to the pictures on a night showing was adults the picture house must have felt they were for adults. Or they would have just shown them on the afternoon bill.

No!!! I love cartoons and I'm also looking the big 3-0 in the eye! The old classics are my favourite. Some of the latest ones are a bit OTT with guns and violence though. I generally don't watch those. Ed, Edd & Eddy are my fav and Johnny Bravo is also LOL material - reminds me of someone I know to the T, even the hairstyle!

I think your friends should grow up. There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying yourself and laugh. That's what cartoons are meant to do. No matter what your age, you should always do things that invoke laughter and light-heartedness because it can really have positive effects on the mind and the body and the soul. Everybody knows that childhood is the best times of our lives and we are at the peak of our health. Watch more cartoons! It helps the imagination and creativity too. =)
2006-09-03 06:34:51 UTC
Cartoons are for all ages. Cartoons such as SpongeBob or Lilo and Stich are for kids but cartoons such as Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, etc which has violance and nudity are for adults. If you are not sure look at the top left corner of the show and it will have a rating.

Hope I helped.♥

certainly not. i am a fan of hanna barberra, warner brothers and MGM cartoons, likewise, tom and jerry and love watching them. i think that is the problem that people don't understand when they ridicule us for still watching cartoons in our 20s, 30s, 40s and even 60s! cartoons don't just invoke memories of our childhood and remind ourselves what are favourites were when we were kids, but they show to us that although it may look endearing and colourful, it also allows us to look at things from a different perspective and not to take everything too seriously. cartoons could almost be seen as a form of escapism from the harsh realities of life. as for a while, it allows us to forget about our troubles and problems that we might be experiencing in our lives.

therefore, cartoons are still cool, no matter what your age is

Cartoons are certainly not just for kids. And honestly, with increasingly more "adult" cartoons coming out, there are quite a few cartoons that are now completely inappropriate for children, which is fine. It just means that there's a growing niche market for adult cartoons. And need I even mention hentai? So watch all the cartoons you like, and tell your so-called "friends" to shove off. What you watch is your own business.

no cartoons are for everyone....the first cartoons where in fact made to entertain the soldiers of WW2.......

but yes I agree, of late there have been some really stupid badly drawn ones on our screens, which are more aimed at children..and there are the ones like the Simpson's as there are jokes in there for all age group although the Simpson's is more aimed at the adult audience

NO!!! I belong to a message board discussing my favourite books from my childhood and reading follow on stories written by board members. I still love old kids programmes too and watch them whenever I have the chance. Plus, think about Harry Potter - marketed as a Children's book series but loved by adults too!

as you can see many adults watch cartoons. luckily we live in the age where people can make up their own minds about what interests them .maybe your friends have a problem because you are perhaps not spending all your free time with them or they are bored of watching reruns with you. keep your inner child.
