I think you are thinking of "RIP TIDE" with Joe Penny and some other guys who flew a helicopter and the nerdy guy had a robot.

The first was the name of a tv series from 1984-1986.



The second Rip was in "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" as well as many other movies and tv shows for the last 50 years.
