On the X-Files, what does the "x" thats taped up on Mulders window represent?

In some of the episodes, Scully tapes an 'x' on Mulders window. I remember one of the episodes, was when Mulder was trapped on the train car with this other man, and there was a lepper that was trying to be smuggled back to Japan. There was a bomb on the train car and it took a combination to unlock it. Scully was looking at the tape that Mulder bought before that showed a man typing in the combination. Right before she watches the video, she tapes the 'x' on the window. I dont know if its a sign for anything or not? If anyone knows, that info would be nice to know!!!

It's a signal. Whenever Fox Mulder needs to talk with his personal "Deep Throat", he puts on an "X" in the window and he will contact him asap. Dana, of course, knows about it and occasionnally, uses it too. Like in the episode. Which I watched recently.

It was the way that Mulder contacted one of his confidential informants that worked inside the government. We never knew his real name, but he was dubbed "X" by the fans and later the characters in the show as "X" also. He was played by the actor Steven Williams. He died at the end of season three in Mulder's hallway.

I believe the "X" on the window was a signal for a meeting with that spy that helped Mulder out. I forgot the guy's name, but when Mulder needed help and his FBI pals wouldn't help, he called on that guy with tape on window

I think it's a signal of some kind, but I'm not sure. I always wondered that too.

i vaguely remember that one and if I remember right it was to get a message to someone.
