Question:
Is the My Little pony: FiM / “Brony” community actually safe for kids?
2013-08-13 03:27:35 UTC
Tons of people have told and explained to me that the show wasn’t made for a specific age group, kids or adults, and from what I’ve the fan base is made up or a good mix of all ages, which is totally fine with me.
But to be straight forward here, with how connected kids are to the internet and the world these days, is it even okay to let my daughter be a part of something that if you went to any search engine on the web, and typed in the name of any character (or even the show itself )the second to first thing to come up is something lude or pornographic? Even in the auto-fill while you type in the search box.

That's what I was wondering. I don't understand why people would hate "bronies" just because of their taste in tv. I hope they're not perverts or anything. Good on you for guarding your kids. There is so much nasty stuff out there :/

yes and no, as always with any fandom you have the group of fans who will make and post the lude/pornographic images of a character, this includes MLP. The brony community in general is fine as long as you stay within the safe areas of the internet.

Googling ponies in general is fine but you have to be aware that some sites will lead to the pornographic part of the fandom, which again can be said about all fandoms, so it's best to keep an eye out on what your daughter is clicking on (as you should be doing anyways as a responsible parent).

Deviant art isn't terrible either, the ration of appropriate to inappropriate pictures is good, but once again just keep an eye out.

Youtube is a place you may want to be wary of, while there won't be any porn on youtube, there is still a fair amount of adult oriented material including violence or socially acceptable unbehavior of MLP on youtube, so i suggest picking out content from there yourself and showing it to your daughter, start out with this maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW5n3k2VgZE

If i had to point out the safest place to look up My Little Pony material, i would have to say to stick to equestriadaily.com as they post positive content such as well made fan art, music, news about the show, and games and in general the people there are nice, or at the very least not outright volatile.

i'm a brony. we don't watch the tutor for nostalgia or something like that. We watch it for the content textile. truthfully i become shocked when I first watched it. The tutor has a great tale, great characters and character progression, and impressive animation! The tutor is a lot extra mature than different cartoons and genuinely has references youthful ladies does no longer get like terminator, the huge lebowski, megastar Trek, and extra. The humor is rather diffused, even though it particularly is nonetheless humorous. The writing is great and the voice appearing is optimal notch. The animation is gentle and has lots of element and shading. And definite, there are songs. I fancy the songs lots yet a majority of them are outstanding and upbeat. there are various action sequences too. on the tip of maximum episodes are some very sensible existence training. one in all them is do no longer decide a e book via its disguise. i think of that's some thing we can all learn right here. next time, confirm you recognize what your coping with formerly you opt. Chef out a pair episodes. I strongly propose return of the cohesion areas a million & 2, and The Crystal Empire areas a million & 2. i wish that's of use to you. thank you!

For the most part, but keep in mind that it is an older fandom and it isn't anyone's job to keep your child's innocence safe but your own, which I applaud you for taking the initiative. I don't know what YOU'VE been Googling, but I just gave it a test run with all the Mane 6's names and the show title and I had to LOOK for something I'd regret seeing, and it was at least a page or two down, not even close to the first or second image. Is that good enough? No, but it's better than what you had. And this was WITHOUT safe search. If you put Safesearch on, it should filter out most of the muck. Even flat out typing in "My Little Pony Rule 34" with the safe search on yields (relatively) safe results compared to what you would've gotten without (still not recommended for kids, but better...)

Even then, nothing is perfect, and it is up to you to monitor what your child does and determine what is and isn't appropriate. I thank you for recognizing that we are a fandom of all ages and kinds, and just know that only a tolerated minority likes that smut. It only takes one person to draw a picture and ruin a perfectly pleasant Googling.

Aside from that, if you let them into other parts of the fandom, keep in mind most bronies are still in high school and college, ages that aren't known for being the most mature or clean mouthed, even if they aren't supporters of clop (brony term for MLP Rule 34; variants being clopper, clopping, etc.). Again, it is ultimately up to you whether or not you think the brony community is actually safe for kids. Have a nice day, and I wish you the best in your future experience with bronies!

It's definitely not safe, do not let a small kid google ponies without parentsl supervision!

If you want to avoid porn, you could make an account on derpibooru.org and then block all tags like 'explicit', 'gore', 'porn' etc, such pictures should not show up then. But it's still a site with an adult fanbase, so there will be shitstorms and mobbing in certain tags, but searching for the character's names should provide safe results. If you are against ponies in romantic situations (in this community almost always homosexual), you may want to block 'shipping' as well.

It's never been safe to allow your child to freely browse the internet.

Someone posted "The Rules Of The Internet" on a forum as a joke. For his rule #34 he wrote "If it exists, there is porn of it - no exceptions." The internet took this as a challenge and has, indeed been finding porn based on anything you can imagine. In fact it is hard to find things that DON'T already have some sort of fan-mad porn already.

So, yes, there is porn of that, and that. And of course of that! And yes, even that, you sicko.

About the best you can do is make sure your child's computer is using SafeSearch on Google, and maybe install some other filter software as well. Never allow you children to brows unsupervised. Find some sites you think are safe, and try to restrict your children to those.

The youngsters who turned up at a brony convention I attended last month seemed absolutely delighted, and nothing (well, maybe a panel or two) ventured beyond PG-13.

Most search engines have switchable filters to keep out the nastier stuff.

Sure. Just because I always say that I own a big white van with blacked out windows and hand out candy to little children, oftentimes with a trollfaced-like picture accompanying it, doesn't mean that I really do.

Plus, there's something called parental controls that can block out some lewder stuff.
