Statement from Viacom

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The move by Time Warner Cable to force such channels as Nickelodeon, COMEDY CENTRAL and MTV off the air is another example of a cable company overreaching for profit at the expense of its viewers.

The renewal we are seeking is reasonable and modest relative to the profits TWC enjoys from our networks. We have asked for an increase of less than 25 cents per month, per subscriber, which adds up to less than a penny per day for all 19 of MTV Networks' channels.

We make this request because TWC has so greatly undervalued our channels for so long. Americans spend more than 20% of their TV viewing time watching our networks, yet our fees amount to less than 2.5% of what Time Warner generates from their average customer.

Throughout the country, we have negotiated equitable license agreement renewals, or are in the final stages of renewals, with virtually every cable and satellite carrier. Nevertheless, Time Warner Cable has dismissed our efforts at a fair compromise and has effectively chosen to deny its customers some of the most popular TV shows on the air.

As a result, we are sorry to say that for Time Warner Cable customers our networks will go dark as of 12:01 on January 1st, denying Time Warner customers shows like Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, and The Hills.

Ultimately, however, if Nickelodeon, COMEDY CENTRAL, MTV and the rest of our programming is discontinued -- over less than a penny per day -- we believe viewers will see this behavior by their cable company as outrageous. Time Warner Cable subscribers who are being handed a January 1st $3 monthly increase in Raleigh, Orange County, Los Angeles, and New York City are simultaneously facing the removal of beloved shows across 19 channels.

We find it a shame that Time Warner Cable remains unreasonable at this time. We hope its leadership will have a change of heart and will seek to negotiate a fair renewal agreement.

I did some research once I saw the alert and freaked out. lol.

I have come to find out that apparently Time Warner is having trouble negotiating fees and such with Viacom, which owns these channels. So I guess Viacom is removing the channels from Time Warner until they can come to an agreement. And since Bright House is part of Time Warner, it's being affected too. I'll post the website that I got all this information from below.

Unfortunately it's true unless Time-Warner and Bright House can reach an agreement with Viacom. Viacom is the distributor of the channels that will be lost. If you go to the Viacom web-site you can read a statement about the channels that will be lost and why. It sure was nice of them to wait until the last minute to notify us, wasn't it?! You can try to call the number they list, but I tried several times but never got through because there are probably tons of people calling right now.

And I wouldnt call anyway..all tht will lead you 2 is higher cable bills...best to just wait...they'll reach an agreement.

There is one solution...AT&T U-Verse TV....I know ppl who have it..the BEST TV ever!!!!!!!!!! And its cheap!!!!!

edit - I found out a secret in some article....They want to raise their rates to carry the channels...because they are losing ratings and money...in normal terms...THEY SUCK AND ARE LOSING MONEY!!!!!!!!! And theyre making YOU pay...

Im going to be a lawyer ...Im on Time Warners/Bright House's side a 110%

oh my god george lopez is my show I just can't live without. It just not even t.v without george lopez. Sometimes I get mad at myself for missing george lopez. If they don't show nick im probably going to kill myself. well not actually I'll just really be sad. Why can't they just discontinue other shows that people barely watch. Every night I make a special dinner and eat it while george lopez. This show made me realize how glad I am to have mexicans in our society. Also cubans. I can't go through a day without benny' sarcasm, max's dyslexia, Carmen's emotional issues, George's I got this, Vick's heavy accents, Angie's symphony, Ernie and his addiction for single moms, Jack and mel's drinking problem, also Marisol's I know huh. Also veronica and Max's love for her. I'm like a huge fan.

I think it's going to happen, but costumers are going to become very angry! They may put these channels back on after customers discontinue their service with them.

I couldn't get through on their 1-866 line either, so I sent an email directly through BH's website. They raise my bill every year 4 bucks and I can't see any "improvements" but they won't take 23 cents out of that to keep the only channels I watch? Now I bet they will raise our bills 20% to hire people to handle the volume of complaints! Unfortunately, I'm held hostage to them because I have no options in my area. They know that and they don't care about their customers.

OMG!!! I just saw that too. We love a lot of shows on those channels. I tried calling the number they provided for Bright House but it rings once then goes to a busy signal. Has anyone gotten through to the number? What do they tell us?

It's selfish of MTV Networks to demand more money just because their ratings are going down the drain. It is not our fault that they haven't produced a quality program in a long time. They should not have to demand more money from cable customers to make up for their deficit. Instead of calling Bright House or Time Warner, call Viacom and let them know that this is ridiculous, and if they want our ratings and our support then they need to produce more quality programming instead of the crap that they have been feeding us as of late.

Further more, they have made deals with other companies for a much lower price when compared to the price that they are proposing to Time Warner and Bright House. They should do the same for cable customers. The money flow is in ratings and advertisement sponsors, not cable customers.

i heard that viacom is asking for a 23 cent increase to each bill. i agree, we shouldn't have to pay those 23 cents, but if it will keep 19 channels that you know EVERYONE watches? why not pay those cents you can find in your back pocket? in my area, we are tied down to bright house, and i only watch mtv and nick.

p.s. ill miss george lopez too =\

they say they are trying to reach an agreement in New York, like, right now. hopefully they do.

It is bad enough that in my city we are held hostage to Brighthouse. They have already removed two channels from the basic cable in an attempt to get us to go digital, now this?

Our rates have been increased twice in three years. Crappy service, less selection.

This is what happens when local government is able to create a monopoly and limit citizens choices.

Yet, we continue re-electing the same thieves back into office to screw us some more.

I have to agree with Viacom on this one. The television stations that they run make up the most watched stations on cable, therefore they should get the small increase that they are requesting. Myself, I pretty much ONLY watch their stations, so I'm not happy about this either, but I predict Time Warner/Bright House will come to an agreement with Viacom rather quickly once their customers start dropping like flies.
